Underclaim, then overdeliver
Why this rule exists
Promising big feels generous in the moment and expensive later. Every inflated commitment becomes a debt I have to repay under pressure, usually while apologizing. I would rather set an honest expectation and then quietly beat it. The relief people feel when you arrive early or do more is real, and it compounds. Trust is built in the small gap between what you said and what you delivered.
In practice
When someone asks how long or how much, I give the honest number, not the hopeful one, and then I try to do a little better. I would rather say Thursday and deliver Tuesday than the reverse. I keep a small buffer between what I commit to out loud and what I privately aim for.
When it doesn't apply
Underclaiming can tip into sandbagging — lowballing so far that people stop believing your estimates. And sometimes a stretch promise is what pulls the best work out of you. Honesty, not fake modesty, is the point.
